On August 26, 2025, the 28th meeting of the China-Canada Joint Economy and Trade Commission (JETC) was held in Ottawa, Canada, co-chaired by Li Chenggang, China International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce, and Rob Stewart, Deputy Minister of International Trade at Global Affairs Canada. The two sides engaged in candid, practical, and constructive discussions on improving and developing bilateral economic and trade relations, properly addressing each other’s economic and trade concerns, and advancing pragmatic economic and trade cooperation.
Li Chenggang noted that this meeting represents an important step to implement the consensus reached during the phone call between China’s Premier and Canada’s Prime Minister. He acknowledged the thorough preparatory work carried out by the two working teams for the meeting. During the session, the two sides explored concrete pathways to enhance economic and trade relations under the new circumstances in a spirit of mutual respect and win-win outcomes. The Chinese side stands ready to work with Canada to leverage the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations and the 20th anniversary of the strategic partnership as opportunities to manage differences, address respective economic and trade concerns, and jointly expand cooperation areas through constructive approaches and pragmatic actions.
The two sides agreed to continue leveraging the JETC mechanism, and through follow-up communications, to accumulate positive outcomes in the economic and trade field, and promote the healthy, stable, and sustainable development of China-Canada economic and trade relations.
