China International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang Attends G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting

On October 10, the G20 Trade and Investment Ministerial Meeting was held in Gqeberha, South Africa. Trade ministers or their representatives from G20 members and guest countries, as well as representatives from international organizations (WTO, UNCATD, OECD, etc.) attended the meeting. China International Trade Representative and Vice Minister of Commerce Li Chenggang participated and delivered remarks.

Key agenda items at the meeting were: the Principles on Trade, Inclusive Growth and Global Challenges; the Trade and Investment Framework for Green Industrialization and Sustainable Development; and the WTO Reform and Development Dimension. The G20 Trade and Investment Ministers' Statement and the Chair's Summary were published after the meeting, laying the economic and trade foundation for the G20 Leaders' Summit scheduled for November 2025.

Li Chenggang emphasized that China stays committed to multilateralism, has put forward the Global Governance Initiative, and has declared that it will not seek new Special and Differential Treatment (S&DT) in current and future WTO negotiations, all of which underscores China’s role as a responsible major developing country through concrete actions. He noted that the G20 has made significant contributions to global trade and investment development, and called for strengthening the G20 trade and investment mechanism to address global challenges through openness and cooperation.

Li stated that China actively contributes to global economic growth while advancing its own development. He urged all parties to safeguard the multilateral trading system, promote free trade, counter unilateralism and protectionism, exercise restraint in imposing trade-restrictive measures, eliminate green trade barriers, jointly support developing countries by leveraging their respective advantages, and drive green industrialization and sustainable development.

During the meeting, Li also held bilateral discussions with heads of delegations and senior officials from international organizations.
